AUCKLAND, Thursday: Canadian social media management platform Hootsuite has released its 2020 Global Digital Report – which includes detailed analyses of the market in NZ.

This robust report is the only one of its kind that covers NZ – everything from social media use, top 10 most visited websites, most Googled queries, how we’re consuming content, information around privacy and trust for internet users … and their concerns, as well as digital advertising figures. 

Ten topline statistics … 

  1. Right here, right now: NZ now has more mobile connections than people: 6.49 million mobile connections, plus 4.47 million internet users (93%) and 3.6 million social media users (75%).
  2. State of Play: 93% of Kiwis own a smartphone, 84% a desktop or laptop computer, 48% a tablet device, 37% gaming consoles, 25% a content streaming device, 21% a smart watch or wristband (up 10% YoY) and 7.2% a smart home device.
  3. Daily Media Consumption: Internet – 6hrs 03mins, Social Media – 1hr 45mins, Watching TV – 3hrs 02mins, Streaming Services – 1hr 13mins and Gaming – 41mins.
  4. Mobile Internet Use: 4.01 million users, 88% of all NZ internet users do so via a mobile, consumption of 2hrs 27mins per average per day.
  5. Share of Web Traffic By Device (Dec ’18 – Dec ’19): Mobile Phones: 46.8% (+28), Laptops & Desktops: 46.3% (-15%), Tablets: 6.8% (-25%) and Other Devices: 0.1% (-26%).
  6. Top 10 Most Visited Websites: (1) Google.com, (2) YouTube, (3) Facebook, (4) Stuff, (5) NZ Herald, (6) Netflix, (7) Google.co.nz, (8) Trade Me, (9) Wikipedia, (10) Metservice.

  8. How Internet Users Aged 16-64 Consume Content: 94% Watch Online Videos, 37% Watch Vlogs, 63% Listen to Streaming Services, 34% Listen to Online Radio, 34% Listen to Podcasts.
  9. Privacy & Trust (Internet Users Aged 16-64): 17% track screen time or set limits to screen time, 59% expressed concern on how companies use their data, 49% used some form of ad-blocking tool within the previous month and 45% deleted cookies in their web browser (on any device) in the past month
  10. ‘Dollars Up For Digital’ 2019 Total Spend): Total Digital Ad Spend Valued at $700.0 million (+6.3% y/y), Digital Search Ad Value – 429.0 million (+5.3% YoY), Social Media Ad Spend – $71 million (+17% y/y), Digital Banner Ad Spend – $87 million (+6.1%), – Digital Video Ad Spend –  $59 million (+8.3%), Digital Classifieds – $53 million (+0.6% YoY).

Hootsuite conducted over 30 interviews with global experts and surveyed 3100+ marketers to identify the distinct global social trends for 2020.
